Ghost Ship Sparky!

Well, at lest the snow that is now 100 feet deep (so it seems) gives me a reason to watch the animals with pleasure! Snow this deep makes my white horse Sparky look like a ghost ship in the back field. Because she only comes up to my waist (head high) her bottom half is buried in the snow leaving part of her tummy, back and head sticking up in some places out in the pasture. She looks eerie sailing around out there. A white shadowy figure in the middle of a thick sown storm, riding the drifting waves that completely cover her legs and the bottom half of her stubby body. Once in a while I can make out Laci the mini tank following her. Its like the ghost ship Sparky is pulling her brown fuzzy life raft as the spotted Dunkay shark circles around them. Yep, even a blizzard can’t keep those 3 inside the barn! Too much excitement trying to get lost in the blanket of white! Maybe they’re playing hide and seek!!

Dances With Horses!

Dancing with horses is my new winter fun past time! All I need is a thick patch of ice and a horse with stubby little legs who makes up dance steps along with me. Laci the min tank, is a great partner! I slide to her, she slides past me. I grab for her mane as I skate on past, she does the splits. I twirl around trying to hang onto icy fur, she throws her head into the air as her hooves run without moving. After about 40 seconds of our dance, we both stand completely still, afraid to move.  I look at her, she at me, each of us waiting for the other to move first. I roll my eyes, take a deep breath and try to move along side her, using her wet back as my brace on the ice. I got past my dance partner and carefully step towards the barn where Dunkay is standing watching the show. He comes trotting out with his ‘play time’ look in his eyes and trots towards me. This girl is not going to dance with a donkey. I turn around and go back to the house, no more dancing with animals!

Talking Goats

Okay…this was weird.  I went out to feed everybody (their favorite past time) and the goats were in the far corner away from all the other animals, not unusual since they don’t like anyone else and keep to themselves. I noticed they were facing each other, almost nose to nose making soft grunting and baaaing sounds back and forth…like they were ‘talking’ to each other. They were so deep in ‘conversation’ that I didn’t want to break-up their special moment.  So I stood there watching with a smile on my face silently kicking myself for once more forgetting to bring the camera out with me. I didn’t get to awwwww every long, Dunkay butted me from behind and the mini tank made sure I saw her, all of her. Apparently the other animals don’t think it’s as cute, they want to eat…..now.

Ahhhhh yes, the sounds of the New Year on the farm! My rooster who started a good 20-30 minutes early was right on cue at the stroke of midnight! He let it out his celebration crow loud and strong, following within seconds, were the neighbors across the street with their left over 4th of July fireworks!  My dogs jumped up and started barking at all the outside party sounds as the famous lighted ball dropped in front of a million people dancing in the streets of New York City blasting from the TV. I’m shocked the goats weren’t staring at the house bleating out the ‘BAAAAAA feed me’ song they’ve been perfecting for months!

Ice Storms and Dancing Horses!

I enjoy the winter season for a couple of reasons. One, it gets rid of the fleas and flies and two, it gives my animals a reason to put on an entertaining show for me when I’m suffering those Winter Time Blues! The horses and Dunkay don’t seem to mind blizzards, ice storms or freezing rain. I especially enjoy the type of rain which quickly turns into ice, covering every surface on the outside world under frosty glass! My 3 brave soldiers will go out to the field searching for lost ‘grain mines’ hidden under the frozen layer of ice and snow. They trot like royalty, taking delicate steps on the ice, sorta like a ballerina but on hooves!  They will dance in sliding semi circles, heads held high to keep their balance, tails swinging back and forth in formation. All I need to do is fix a cup of hot chocolate, sit on the lazy boy chair under my heated throw blanket, turn towards the oversized picture window and watch the performance!!

Dead Horse??

I should train myself NOT to look out the window early in the morning to see what the naughty’s are doing, its too stressful! I pulled back the curtain to see what was going on in the field and I spotted Laci the mini tank laying halfway in the barn door. Dunkay was trapped in the barn with his head poking out, Sparky and both goats were stuck outside trying to get back in! Our mini tank was laying completely still, head down, not moving a muscle. I truly thought she was dead. She likes to lay down in the middle of the field but in the middle of door way? I ran from window to window trying to get a different view to see if she was moving, I even knocked on one window which is silly, they can’t hear me that far away although both goats perked up and looked my way happy to hear human sounds, they have ears of an elephant when it comes to the possibility of food, all other sounds they ignore. I woke Chad up and told him in less than 3 seconds how Laci was laying in the doorway possibly dead and that the other animals are trapped! I yelled that he needs to get up NOW and go do CPR before we lose her!! He looked at me with one eye open with his ‘here she goes again’ look and mumbled something about the ‘horse is sleeping, leave her alone’. I insisted he get up and save my horse,he insisted that he stay in bed and rolled over. Needless to say, by the time I got dressed and out to the barn, Laci was sitting up looking at me with joy in her eyes knowing that breakfast was early this morning!
